Richard T. Chung, M.D.

dr richard chungDr. Richard T. Chung has been treating Alaskans for more than 20 years. He attended undergraduate school at Stanford University and medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1994, he completed his residency at Stanford in the field of radiation oncology. Drawn to Alaska by his fascination with our state, Dr. Chung began practicing oncology at the Anchorage Radiation Therapy Center the same year.

More than two decades later, Dr. Chung has been a champion of bringing the latest radiation therapy technologies to our community so patients and their families can receive cancer treatment right here at home. He was instrumental in opening our Valley Radiation Therapy Center in 2006. In 2013, Dr. Chung collaborated with Dr. Stephen Settle to bring the Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ to Anchorage. This is the most accurate and advanced radiosurgery technology available and ARTC has the only Gamma Knife Center located North of Seattle.

Stephen H. Settle, M.D., Ph.D.

stephen settleDr. Stephen Settle and his wife always dreamed of returning to their roots on the West Coast, so when he was recruited as the medical director of the Alaska Gamma Knife Center in 2013, they jumped at the chance to move their four children to Alaska. Dr. Settle is spearheading the Gamma Knife® program at Anchorage Radiation Therapy Center which uses the latest cancer treatment technology, the Elekta Gamma Knife® Perfexion™, for non-invasive treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors and conditions in the brain.

After graduating from Stanford University with a Ph.D. and earning his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Settle completed his residency training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was later recruited to a joint-faculty position at MD Anderson and the Baylor College of Medicine, where he held dual appointments as an assistant professor.

In addition to treating patients with cancer, Dr. Settle conducted translational research on brain and spine tumors and served as the course director for resident doctors training in radiation oncology. While at MD Anderson, Dr. Settle developed expertise in stereotactic radiosurgery of the brain and spine, including the use of Gamma Knife to treat patients with intracranial disease.
