Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments for cancer. It uses sophisticated technology to aim high doses of radiation at cancer cells, damaging the genetic material within cancer cells and making it difficult for these cells to reproduce. When these cells die, the body naturally eliminates them. Radiation treatment can be delivered to the body externally, or it may be placed in the body near tumor cells or injected into the bloodstream. You may receive radiation therapy before, during or after surgery, depending on the type of cancer being treated. Some patients receive radiation therapy by itself and some receive radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy.
Radiation therapy is a highly effective method of treating different cancer types, including breast, lung, gynecological, head and neck, prostate and many more. It is typically a focused treatment and targets only the affected part of the body.
The goal of radiation treatment is to target as many cancer cells as possible without damaging nearby healthy tissue. Depending on the type of radiation therapy technology used, you may receive treatment in a single session or through a series of visits over a period that can last anywhere from one to eight weeks.

Gamma Knife® radiosurgery is a major advance that has changed the landscape within the field of neurosurgery, and in Alaska only available at the Alaska Gamma Knife Center. It is the primary treatment for brain tumors and the only stereotactic radiosurgery system specifically approved for treating brain metastases. Gamma Knife® radiosurgery is a minimall- to non-invasive technique where diseased tissue is treated with a single, precisely focused dose of gamma rays. Normal brain tissue adjacent to the diseased tissue receives little to no radiation. Gamma Knife is done with the partnership of a Neurosurgeon.

Supported by two decades of pre-clinical research, no other neurosurgical tool has produced such impressive results. Its many benefits continue to make it the treatment of choice for brain tumors.
High Dose Radiation
High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy that delivers radiation close to, or inside, the tumor(s) in the body. HDR Brachytherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or after a tumor has been surgically removed to eliminate any remaining cancerous cells.
With HDR Brachytherapy, tiny hollow catheters are implanted directly into the tumor. During treatment, a computer-controlled machine sends the small radioactive seeds down each catheter to deliver radiation at multiple depths and varying times. The overall treatment time at the tumor site is less than 10 minutes. The seeds are then removed so that no radioactive material remains in the patient’s body. Depending on the type of cancer being treated, a high-dose rate treatment plan may require one session or multiple sessions over the course of 2-3 weeks.
